Maxine Barlow makes a discovery which leads to the identity of the attacker.
A student teacher learns the ropes the hard way when he takes on the kids of Waterloo Road. Jack gives Davina and opportunity to prove herself in the classroom while Steph tries to find a new home for Maxine. Jack and Kim are humiliated when a work experience placement goes disastrously wrong, and Steph puts her reputation on the line to speak up for Maxine.
Davina finally lets Jack know how she feels about him. Lorna gets to the heart of a persistent truant's real problem and Jack has the chips stacked against him in the final interviews for the permanent headship. Izzie and Tom's bitterness towards each other escalates.
Lorna plays cupid by taking Tom and Izzie away for a surprise treat in the countryside; meanwhile Steph's attempt to put Jack right about Davina backfires. The school's healthy eating initiative goes out of the window when a local gang targets the school, selling burgers.
Events take a sinister turn when a pupil collapses and is rushed into hospital. Jack's determination to protect the kids and to find the source of the drugs makes him lose sight of the rising mayhem being wrought on the school by the new sponsor governor. Meanwhile, it's make or break for Kim and Andrew. As the gates open for a new term at Waterloo Road the school is firmly in the spotlight following the murder of drama teacher, Izzie Redpath.
Although Jack has won a national bravery award, he secretly blames himself for Izzie's death. Meanwhile, Steph is relishing her new position as head of pastoral care, but disaster looms as a new pupil, Karla Bentham, who has Asperger syndrome , is placed in her less-than-capable hands.
Utter chaos ensues when Grantly is on the receiving end of one of Karla's violent outbursts, leaving new Deputy Eddie Lawson to pick up the pieces. Tom Clarkson faces fresh troubles when Chlo skips school to marry Donte Charles. Not convinced by Steph's self-serving 'advice' to let it be, Jasmine Koreshi decides to trust her instinct and shares her concern about Paul Langley with deputy Eddie Lawson.
Her suspicions are confirmed when Eddie finds Paul after a beating he literally asked for. When a big knife is reported to be missing from the school cafeteria the situation escalates. Today is Waterloo Road's first ever girls' football match and Tom is preparing the team to give it all they've got. Meanwhile, Jasmine is having the day from hell. She can't control her class and loses it big style, throwing half the girls football team into detention and jeopardising the match.
Matt Wilding injures himself in an effort to help wounded pupil, Ben McNulty , and is surprised when the boy recoils in horror as he bandages him. It's a day of heartbreak at Waterloo Road. Donte is on the warpath after finding his wife, Chlo in bed with Brett. Steph needles Jack his impending marriage will be a charade unless he comes clean about their affair. If his relationship with Davina is as strong as he says it is, the truth won't break them up, will it?
Jack's called to account for past decisions and financial acrobatics, facing the biggest challenge of his career. Tom struggles to keep his new family together with his step-daughters hating each other and separated from their partners. Grantly's gambling spirals out of control. Everyone at Waterloo Road is still reeling after the shocking resignation of Jack.
Everyone apart from Eddie, who seems destined to become the new acting Head. However, he's hardly had time to warm Jack's chair, when he's dealt a bitter blow in the shape of Rachel Mason , newly appointed Head Teacher. Eddie is keen to prove Rachel wrong with his 'bad boys' wilderness trip but things go wrong and he is forced to make a life or death decision. Rachel tries to keep a lid on things with Chlo's return to school.
Her high profile approach to truancy unwittingly puts a little boy in danger. A police investigation kicks off when Janeece Bryant and Karla Bentham make a shocking discovery during an archaeological dig. Speculations run rampant and the school might even harbour a murderer. Rachel forces Eddie to confront issues from his past while Mika shares a secret with Brett. Matt's thrown into a panic when Rachel announces the school musical is to be performed earlier in the day for a VIP audience, without a proper rehearsal.
It doesn't help that a student feeling snubbed plans to sabotage the important staging. Eddie's ex turns up out of the blue. Rachel and Matt take four boys at risk on a day trip to prison, attempting to show them the realities of a life of crime.
Ringleader Bolton Smilie tells tales about his dad's easy life as a powerful inmate and sees the trip as a laugh: not for long though. Meanwhile the rest of the school is doing mock exams and faced with the teachers derision of student's fears about their performance Eddie challenges the staff to re-sit one themselves.
Darren Briggs sends Davina flowers and asks her out for dinner, supposedly as a thank you for helping his dyslexic son Darren Jnr. She's initially flattered by his interest but when he becomes more intrusive she makes it clear she's seeing someone. Unfortunately, Darren Briggs doesn't seem to be able to take 'no' for an answer. Rachel is visited by entrepreneur and property bidder Stuart Hordley, who presents her with a shocking proposition.
Rachel's anxious about which construction firm will win the bid for Waterloo Road's new training centre — she must back blackmailer Stuart Hordley's bid or her past will be revealed. At Tom's, the sexual tension overwhelms Tom and Davina who end up in bed together — and Mika catches them. Janeece leaves her work experience at her dream job in a spectacular manner and gets a second chance in a care home with Maxine where she surprises herself and others with unexpected talents, taking to resident Bessie, played by Rosemary Leach , and helpless dementia patients.
When Jasmine intervenes in an altercation between bully Michaela White and a younger pupil, she has no idea the day will end in her suspension following assault allegations against her.
Meanwhile, romance may be back in the air for Brett and Mika, and Stuart apologises to Rachel for blackmailing her and starts wooing her — but how genuine is he? Matt's mother, Susan Wilding, suddenly announces she's on her way to visit and, in a panic, Matt quickly removes all traces of partner Colin from their flat. When the sixth formers are on work experience at Colin's company, Matt tells Colin that he wants him to move out for a few days since he's never told his parents about his sexuality.
Maxine overhears and sends a text message back to the whole school, outing Matt as gay. Grantly is even more curmudgeonly than usual when he's asked to supervise Waterloo Road's bad boys alongside minxy duo Aleesha Dillon and Danielle Harker to cater for the Governors' AGM lunch. Meanwhile, it's the last day for supply teacher Wilson Bingham with whom Janeece has fallen in love with.
She informs her stunned friends they're together and won't need to keep their love secret anymore after this day. Janeece ignores her friends warnings and leaves for a hotel for their first time, while the teachers find it hard to reconcile their growing suspicions about a sexual predator in their midst with the popular and competent Wilson. The tension between Eddie and Rachel reaches breaking point.
Mika, frustrated by Tom ignoring her requests to go on an environmental protest, takes her eco-warrior plans with Brett to another level, on the building site of the new Training Centre. Their protest takes a dangerous turn when Mika's online-contacts, willing to do violence, show up to help. When immigration officers arrive at Waterloo Road, Rachel learns that Sameen Azizi's family are being held in a detention centre and are due to be deported to Iran later that day.
Sameen has escaped the centre and hid at the school, after her mother begged her to flee and finish her education in England. With Aleesha and Danielle she barricades herself in the changing rooms. Sameen's not going without a fight. Donte sees Davina getting into a swanky car and is shocked to see the driver is his old headmaster, Jack Rimmer. Jack, who has overcome his demons resulting from Izzie's death, is excited to have heard from Davina. He tells her about his new well-paid job as headteacher of an international school in Dubai, inviting her to accompany him.
Will she come with him or stay to work things out with Tom? Steph's latest attempt at finding a sponsor for the school ends in near disaster. It's the final day of term at Waterloo Road, and the school is pitted against a rival school in the spelling bee championships and the girls football. Stuart Hordley, enraged at the loss of all his business, returns to the school determined to expose Rachel's past to the school. A member of the Waterloo Road exam board visits the school, as the plagiarism scandal instigated by Maxine Barlow comes to their attention.
As he was the only member of staff who knew of the cheating, Grantly Budgen decides to meet the exam board head on, determined not to let anyone else find out about his actions. Tragedy is in store as Hordley throws a smouldering fag-end into the bins filled with paper. As they burst into flames it ignites a leaky gas canister, leading to a massive explosion and sending a fireball ripping through the school's canteen.
Rachel is keen to start the new term with a clean slate and no more mistakes. New pupil Earl Kelly , however, ensures that Waterloo Road experiences one of the worst days in its history. Rachel's sister Melissa Ryan risks getting them both fired when she loses control of her adult education class.
Eddie is furious when he discovers that Rachel has gone behind his back. As the sparks fly between him and Melissa he has to assess how he really feels. Elsewhere in the school, the new security guard Dave Miller is taking his job seriously, until he develops a serious crush on Steph Haydock.
Meanwhile, an ill-thought out lie from Steph looks like it might just spell the end for Grantly's marriage Trying to ease the situation, Eddie organises a falconry day at the school, but when one of the birds goes missing, there only seems to be one explanation Melissa has organised a Drugs Awareness Initiative for the school, with voluntary drugs tests for the senior year pupils.
However, school Governor Ralph Mellor has his own agenda and plans to use the tests to get Marley Kelly kicked out of the school and away from his daughter, Flick Mellor , even if it means tampering with the results. Matt has applied to be an emergency foster carer but may be biting off more than he can chew with his first ward — Sambuca Kelly. Meanwhile, Donte has organized an underground boxing match between Bolton Smilie and another pupil from a rival school.
Meanwhile, a loved-up Eddie must keep his mind on the job, but his day gets hijacked by an argument between Danielle and her father. What starts off as a debate about home-schooling versus state education soon escalates into a domestic dispute. He wants them to finally have what they never got from their own childhoods; a proper family, a home and stability.
However, the arrival of a mystery girl looking for Earl has Maxine questioning if she really knows him at all. The furious confrontation that follows triggers a chain of events that leads to tragedy. The school is still reeling after the murder of Maxine Barlow. Rachel feels responsible — the buck stops with her. She plans to resign with immediate effect. Elsewhere, realising that life is precious, Donte surprises Chlo with a romantic proposition and Eddie organises a surprise for Melissa.
Popular with staff and students alike, Kim raises a few eyebrows when she turns up with a baby in tow, but no Andrew Treneman. Kim finds herself battling with Sarah-Leanne to win the hearts and minds of her celebrity-obsessed students.
Kim struggles to keep her personal life from impacting on her job as she tries to get rid of him. Desperate, she turns to Steph, who is immediately suspicious. With Rachel on a course, Eddie's at the helm but soon finds out it's not going to be an easy ride — a community of travellers have pitched up next to the school and the kids are to be enrolled at Waterloo Road. Tensions soon mount between the pupils and the travellers.
Eddie thinks he has the answer and arranges a football match, but things soon get dirty on the pitch and the simmering tensions of the day bubble over.
Before he knows it, Eddie has a riot on his hands. Matt's choir are practicing hard, now that Rachel wants a performance that evening. Matt is left deflated when it transpires most of the members were blackmailed to attend and the race is on to re-group and recruit willing members in time for their showcase. Meanwhile, a stack of STI leaflets that Kim has been distributing to her sex education class fall into the wrong hands.
However, the day descends into a shambolic mess when one pupil sees the opportunity for a personal act of revenge. Elsewhere, Davina is delighted to finally qualify as a teacher, and things seem perfect when Rachel offers her a job at Waterloo Road, but her day starts to unravel when she discovers that money has gone missing from her and Tom's joint account. Forced together on a school trip, their antagonism builds to a life-threatening climax.
Back at school with the exams in full swing, Chlo realises how much the future she wants will be restricted by motherhood. She is forced to make the hardest decision of her life, with devastating consequences for Donte.
A concerned Kim mediates. She urges Chlo to involve Donte and ask Tom for advice, but Chlo seems determined to proceed no matter what. Meanwhile, a Home Office official turns up at the school to tell a shocked Eddie and Rachel that Kim has taken Grace from Rwanda against her father's wishes.
The officials paint her as little more than a criminal who paid another woman for her baby. Still reeling from losing Grace, Kim struggles to hold it together as organiser of a fundraising day at the school.
Meanwhile Rose Kelly and Candice Smilie prepare a menu for the relief day using their knock-off meat. However, when a mystery illness strikes the school, the dodgy dealings in the canteen come under suspicion. Meanwhile, despite Marley returning the money Ralph bribed him before, Ralph goes too far with Marley, by giving him a surprise smash on the way to school.
In the season finale and the US series finale , Waterloo Road is in the final of North West Schools Choir of the Year competition, but things take a bad turn when it becomes apparent that Flick stole the lyrics for the song. Rachel decides to save the reputation of the school and withdraws them from the competition.
Can he and Steph pull out the stops and re-write another song in time to still take part? Back at the school, a loved-up Eddie is totally gob smacked to find Melissa waiting for him. It's all change at Waterloo Road as it has merged with local private school John Fosters, which was forced to close when wealthy parents could no longer afford the fees. As a result, around new pupils are enrolled at Waterloo Road and neither the "posh" John Fosters pupils nor the "scuzzy" Waterloo Road kids are happy about it.
The playground divisions are echoed in the staffroom as many of the old John Fosters team have been ushered in to ensure the smooth transition, much to the annoyance of the existing staff. Let the battle commence! The hostility between the ex-John Fosters pupils and their Waterloo Road peers continues unabated.
Meanwhile Tom finds that his past is being unearthed thanks to Josh Stevenson. Danielle and Aleesha stagger into school after a night out drinking in Rochdale's bars and clubs. Danielle, in particular, is suffering, so Paul steals some ethanol from the science lab in order to help her out with a "hair of the dog".
Paul and Bolton start bootlegging the ethanol to the other pupils, not realising how dangerous the side effects of their concoction could be. Max Tyler soon discovers their scam but it's too late for barely conscious Danielle, who is rushed to hospital by Steph.
Could Steph's lack of judgment prove to have serious consequences for both of them? While this goes on, Rachel and Max's relationship deteriorates and Tom discovers that Josh is indeed his son.
Year 10 pupil Luke Pendle has kept the fact that he lives in a care home a secret from everyone, including his girlfriend Siobhan Mailey — who finds out the truth when she follows him home.
Confused at his deceit, she confides in her best friend, Amy, who quickly spreads Luke's secret around the school. After a day of snide and nasty comments, Luke snaps — only to have the full force of Max Tyler's authoritarian rule descend on him. Steph starts a teaching course, Grantly organises a staff-room petition against Max's reforms and Tom tries to get to know Josh better, despite his son's resistance.
It's Open Day at Waterloo Road and the school is buzzing with preparations. Max and Rachel are determined to show that the merger with John Fosters is a success and set out to wow the parents and governors with a united school. Ruby Fry , meanwhile, has taken it upon herself to upgrade the school's buffet menu and puts caviar and other pricey sundries on her husband, John's, company credit card. When Ruby sneaks home to pick up some forgotten ingredients, however, she is confronted with bailiffs and John is forced to admit that his company is bankrupt.
Steph tries new techniques to get her way with Jo and Josh's relatedness to Tom is made public. New deputy head Christopher Mead becomes the focus of unwelcome romantic attention when his Year 10 fan club become increasingly brazen.
