Dragon behavior A soldier being eaten by a dragon A Dragon not engaged in combat will emit a distinctive "air rushing" sound while in flight. Dragons are Neutral enemies, meaning they are hostile towards all characters in the immediate area, and vice versa.
However, sometimes dragons will not notice any enemies in the area at all and fly around nonchalantly. One may eventually become aware of nearby mobs and attack them, but if it does not encounter any enemies it eventually flies away. Dragons have numerous combat patterns. When they are first encountered, they will usually take advantage of their speed while in flight to sweep enemies on the ground with Shout attacks. Occasionally, they may also stop to hover in place, or land on the roof of a building and proceed to use a Shout, and then fly away for another attack.
If the target is out of range for regular Shouts, the dragon will use a longer ranged Fire or Frost "ball" Shout which explodes on impact with a surface. When grounded, they become susceptible to close-ranged attacks, and their attacks consist of swinging their tails, using Shouts, and attempting to bite at an enemy with their jaws. If dragons successfully do enough damage to a player, they will perform a finishing move by grabbing half of the Dragonborn's body with their mouth, swinging them back and forth a couple of times, then launching them into the air.
After a dragon has sustained enough damage, it may lose the ability to fly. If airborne when this happens it will crash land in the nearest relatively open area , scarring the ground in the process. Any random dragon encounter may be avoided by entering another cell, such as a cave or ruins. Exiting out of a different entrance will always cause the dragon to vanish, whereas if the Dragonborn exits out of the same entrance, the dragon may still be waiting for them depending on how much time in-game was spent in the other cell.
Don't be intimidated by their size and vicious attacks; you can defeat one with sufficient willpower. Naghaliiv is a servant of Adluin, and one of the most malevolent dragons of Skyrim.
For those who purchased the Dragonborn add-on, Naghaliiv can be mounted. Naghaliiv can fire both Frost breath and Fire breath. After defeating him, Naghaliiv can be resurrected like many other dragons. Alduin appears and circles his burial mound before Naghaliiv appears. Although there are good dragons like Paarthurnax, even Paarthurnax can have violent outbursts. It goes to show that the dragons of Skyrim are untamed beasts that are not meant to be trusted.
Not much is known about Sahrotaar, except for how it performs in combat. Sahrotaar uses both Fire breath and Frost breath against its prey. One can encounter by completing the "At the Summit of Apocrypha" quest. Sahrotaar fights for you at some point in the quest, and it can be inferred that Sahrotaar was bent to serve Miraak, the antagonist of The Elder Scrolls V: Dragonborn. The appearance of Durnehviir is slightly different than that of a regular Skyrim dragon. Of course, in the mythical land of Skyrim, dragons are not ordinary creatures.
Upon defeating Durnehviir, it's body erupts in a purplish flame. Durnehviir has a small resemblance to the Frost Dragon because of its appearance and attacks, but for the most part, Durnehviir is unique. This dragon has four horns on its head and spikes protruding from its back. Durnehviir is a level 20 dragon that you encounter near the middle of the main story. The Ancient Dragon is not to be confused with the Elder Dragon. Although they have a similar appearance, there is a different hue of color on the Ancient Dragon.
Ancient Dragons are more yellow and bronze. Defeating an Ancient Dragon is not easy as they are some of the most fierce dragons in Skyrim. The Dragonborn will most likely encounter Nahagliiv quite early on in the game, making him one of the easier dragons to deal with. If you approach Rorikstead, you'll discover a burial mound not too far from the village. If Nahagliiv has already been resurrected, he'll usually be circling around the area and Rorikstead.
Since Nahagliiv scales according to the player's level and he's close to most early game locations, he shouldn't pose too much of an issue. Occasionally you might even see him engaged in a battle against local Forsworn. Since then he was buried in Kynesgrove, which is where the Dragonborn will travel to with Delphine who insists that they prove they are truly the Dragonborn by defeating Sahloknir.
This quest is pretty early on in the game, which means that Sahloknir won't be too hard to deal with and you'll also have Delphine help you with the battle. Once you've graduated from Brown Dragons and leveled up to 20, you'll start seeing these green dragons chasing you around Skyrim. Blood Dragons are more persistent than their brown counterparts, going as far as following you into cities until they get to you.
They're a little bit sturdier and tougher than their brown versions and are divided into Frost and Fire types. By this time the player should have enough abilities and experience to properly deal with dragons, so they only pose a slightly greater challenge. Vuljotnaak is one of the dragons that you'll witness getting resurrected by Alduin as you adventure through Skyrim.
His burial ground is located nearby Fort Sungard and Broken Fang Cave, and although he is a named dragon he is somewhat easy to defeat. You'll only see him resurrected round Act II of the main quest line, and he'll be scaled to the Dragonborn's level, so depending on how early you progress to this point he may or may not be high level. Durnehviir is a bit of a special case, because he's undead.
A long time ago he practiced the art of necromancy, a rather unlikely choice for a dragon. It was this interest that led him to seek out the Ideal Masters, with whom he struck a deal. If Durnehviir would guard the Soul Cairn and Valerica until her death, he would have access to the undead realm and be able to summon an army of living dead. Unfortunately, Valerica turned out to be a vampire, which essentially condemned Durnehviir to an eternity of servitude.
During his battle, he will summon skeleton men to his aid. Introduced around level 30, Frost Dragons are an ice version of regular dragons and their bluish scales are a tell-tale sign of this. In order to defeat them it's advised to not use any frost type spells, but instead go for fire spells which they're weak to.
If your armor rating isn't the best or you have light armor instead of heavy armor, it's best to take down these beasts with a bow or spells from afar, since they're easily able to bite through armor with significant damage.
Once you're sent on a mad quest to go and find the Elder Scroll, you'll come across Viinturuth if you happen to be around Anga's Mill. Resurrected yet again by Alduin, he's a particularly aggressive dragon and can use either frost or fire, depending on your level. His toughness will also depend on how high level the Dragonborn is, but at this point of the main quest it's highly likely that you'll already have several levels and dragon fights under your belt.
