The past year saw the lowest number of casualties since the founding of the Israel Defense Forces, with a total of 27 soldiers losing their lives in The army launched an extensive plan to prevent suicide in , with numerous programs designed to better train commanders to identify soldiers who may have suicidal thoughts, and streamlining army procedures to ensure all relevant information is received by mental health officers as soldiers move between units.
Of the 27 casualties in , five died in car accidents, two died from illness, two in training accidents and three others are being investigated by the military, including one who was electrocuted after falling into a pool. The two training fatalities were Sgt. Evyatar Yosefi, 20, who drowned during a navigation exercise last January, and Ron Oved, who was hit by a bus while trying out for a combat unit.
Another 35 soldiers were seriously injured over the past year, including 13 in traffic accidents, 14 from medical reasons, and two in training accidents. In comparison, of the 43 IDF soldiers who died in , eight are suspected of committing suicide, two died in training accidents, eight were killed in combat, 10 died from medical reasons and 14 in traffic accidents. Another 41 soldiers were severely injured.
Two years earlier, of the 41 soldiers who died in , 15 soldiers are suspected of committing suicide, nine were killed in military accidents, seven in civilian traffic accidents, six died due to medical reasons, and another four soldiers were killed in action. Thirteen died last year in training, work, or traffic accidents; five died of illness and other medical causes; and one soldier, Amit Ben Yigal, was killed during operational duty in the northern West Bank. Of the nine soldiers who committed suicide, two had reached out to military authorities for help. The leading cause of death for soldiers in was suicide, with at least 12 service members taking their own lives, including one American-Israeli lone soldier, Mika Levit.
This represented an increase over , when nine soldiers died by suicide, but was still part of an overall downward trend in the prevalence of suicide in the IDF in recent years.
Yanko said the military was working to keep bringing down the number of suicides, making guns less available to troops when they were not needed and increasing the number of mental health officers to make it easier for soldiers to receive psychological help. The next-most-common cause of death was car accidents, which claimed the lives of five soldiers. According to Yanko, the numbers of soldiers killed in car accidents has been decreasing in recent years and is currently below the rates among civilians.
